Air Date: July 20, 2017

Dr. Sami discusses the phycological symptoms, identification process and prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

In her interview with Fox 26, oculofacial plastic surgeon Dr. Mirwat Sami discusses body dysmorphic disorder, a psychiatric condition in which a person becomes obsessed with what they perceive as flaws in the appearance of their body and have an unrelenting need to correct said issues. Common focal points of the condition are the hair, nose, eyes, and skin.

This condition can result in a person undergoing countless aesthetic treatments and procedures in an obsessive manner that can eventually spiral out of control and take over their lives.

While the condition itself is caused by psychological issues, factors like social media and reality TV have placed a huge focus on false and heavily edited representations of people. The influence of these factors on the issue cannot be ignored.
