Dr. Sami discussing the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases via eye exams.

People say you can tell a lot about someone by looking in their eyes, but you can bet they were not referring to the condition of their heart. As it turns out, an examination of the vessels in the retina can tell a lot about how other organs in the body are doing and can even be used to diagnose certain conditions before they begin to present themselves.

In this interview with Fox 26, Houston oculofacial plastic surgeon Dr. Mirwat Sami discusses the value of seeing an ophthalmologist and how doing so can lead to early detection of cardiovascular issues and conditions like diabetes.

Once a person reaches age 40, coming in annually for a single eye exam with full dilation and examination of the retina can make all the difference, especially when it comes to identifying and diagnosing serious medical concerns.
