Botox® Cosmetic injections are one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles. Treatments with Botox® Cosmetic in Houston are a specialty service provided by Dr. Mirwat Sami.

BOTOX® TEMPORARILY RELAXES MUSCLES

Botox® Cosmetic temporarily relaxes muscles and can be used to decrease or eradicate crow’s feet around the eyes, along with frown lines, forehead creases, and thick bands in the neck.

Botox® can also be used to prevent chin puckering, correct brow asymmetry, eliminate lipstick lines around the lips, and even raise the corners of the mouth to give a more youthful and upturned appearance.

This quick and virtually painless injection can be used to tastefully relax and rejuvenate the face without leaving it expressionless. The idea is to look more youthful, relaxed and revitalized.

WHAT EXACTLY IS BOTOX®?

Botox® is a medical drug that is derived from the botulinum toxin. It is used both cosmetically and for treatments of certain muscle conditions. Botox® works by causing temporary paralysis or weakening of muscles where it is injected.

It was first introduced to the world in the 1980s by ophthalmologists who discovered its use in the treatment of eye muscle disorders. Since 2002, it has been FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines).

Since then, its popularity has soared, making it one of the top five non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed each year in the United States.

HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?

Botox® works by essentially paralyzing or weakening the muscles it is injected into and preventing them from contracting. It does so by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that triggers tuscle contractions that lead to skin wrinkling.

Results are visible within one week after treatment and last for three to six months, depending on the individual.

WHAT AREAS ARE USUALLY INJECTED?

The injections of Botox® are aimed at specific parts of the face that display unsightly lines and wrinkles. Areas such as the forehead, between the brows (frown lines), around the eyes (crow’s feet), and the mouth (lipstick lines) are frequently injected with Botox® to prevent the muscles from moving and causing wrinkles.

Botox® injections can also be used to address excess sweating (hyperhidrosis) in areas like the armpits, migraine headaches, and overly square jaw and jawline contouring.

For deeper facial wrinkles in areas around the nose and mouth, cheek-volume restoration, and filling of undereye hollows, patients can achieve better results with dermal fillers. We offer several popular dermal-filler options.

BOTOX® for the Jaw

The masseter muscle is thick in the jaw and cheek region, and it is used for chewing. In many patients, this muscle is large enough that causes the appearance of an overly square jaw.

A too-square jaw can negatively affect facial proportions and disrupt the balance of the entire face. For patients who are unhappy with their overly square jaw, Botox® jaw reduction can be performed.

This form of minimally invasive jaw refinement is quite effective. It restores natural facial proportions by slimming the face. Unlike surgical jaw-reduction procedures, Botox® masseter reduction requires no scalpels or incisions and does not necessitate any frustrating downtime.

During jaw Botox®, several units of Botox® are injected into the overworked masseter muscle. Botox® blocks nerve signals to the muscle, allowing it to relax. This results in a softening of the too-square jaw and jawline.

Jaw Botox® can also be used to reduce severe involuntary teeth clenching and grinding, also known as bruxism. Bruxism wears down teeth and causes problems like headaches, jaw tightness, gum sensitivity, and jaw pain. It makes sleep difficult, affecting mood and creating anxiety, which in turn increases the severity of the grinding.

Injecting Botox® into the jaw to reduce masseter muscles lessens the clenching of the jaw. When this clenching is reduced, bruxism symptoms disappear, improving one’s quality of life.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX®?

Men and women seeking a relaxed and refreshed look may be candidates for this procedure. The best candidates for treatment have realistic expectations. To see the results achieved with past patients, look over our Botox® Cosmetic before and after photos in our gallery.

DOES BOTOX® HURT?

There is little pain associated with this procedure, as only the tiniest of needles are used. Numbing creams or ice application are both unnecessary in our vast experience injecting Botox®, and most patients report no or very little discomfort during this short procedure.

Based on studies that we conducted, anesthetics decrease the effect and duration of the toxin and so are not recommended in our practice.

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING AFTER I GET MY INJECTIONS?

For those looking to get Botox® in Houston, there’s no need to worry about any aftercare. There is no real recovery associated with Botox® injections, and patients return immediately to their normal activities. Many working individuals and executives choose to indulge in this cosmetic pursuit during a quick break in their daily routines.

WILL BOTOX® LAST FOREVER?

No. Botox® has temporary effects that generally wear off between three and six months.

IF I STOP USING BOTOX®, WILL MY WRINKLES BE WORSE THAN WHEN I FIRST STARTED?

Botox® does not cause wrinkles to get worse. However, if a patient were to use Botox® for several years and then suddenly stop, they may see a significant difference from when they first started. Unfortunately, this difference is simply because of the time passed and the amount the skin has naturally aged during that time.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE EFFECTS OF BOTOX® WEAR OFF?

Around three months, the muscles will regain their normal use. The skin will react and become more visibly wrinkled, just as it was before the injections.

HOW MUCH DOES BOTOX® COST?

The amount of Botox® used and the areas to be addressed are discussed with the doctor at the time of the consultation. On average, the cost of treatment of Botox® Cosmetic in Houston ranges between $200 and $700.

We are also a participant in the Brilliant Distinctions program, a rewards program designed by Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox® Cosmetic. Rewards can be redeemed for price reductions in future treatments.

WHO CAN ADMINISTER BOTOX®?

Botox® is a prescription and should be performed by skilled injectors with precise knowledge of facial anatomy. Having a trained medical professional with years of experience in the field will help reduce the risk of any adverse effects or complications.

Here at Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Mirwat Sami performs all the Botox® Houston treatments herself, ensuring that all her patients receive customized and individualized care.

IS BOTOX® DANGEROUS?

Botox® is a toxin injected into the body, and simply because of that fact, there are risks associated with it. Fortunately, if you are looking for Botox® in Houston, then you can find a highly trained and qualified professionals to administer it. Administration by a professional exponentially reduces the risks and ensures that the procedure goes flawlessly.

Self-administration of Botox® in Houston, or administration by a person who lacks the necessary qualifications, can result in the toxin spreading throughout the body beyond the injection site and causing issues such as problems speaking, muscle weakness, and lack of bladder control.

It is never recommended that anyone but a highly trained professional administer Botox®. Taking that risk can result in major cosmetic issues (droopy eyelid, crooked smile, etc.) and potentially life-threatening health conditions.

WHAT IF I HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION SUCH AS LUPUS, A SKIN CONDITION, OR FIBROMYALGIA?

If a patient seeking to have Botox® administered also has a medical condition, a physician must be consulted first.

There are no findings that support Botox® having adverse reactions to conditions such as fibromyalgia. However, certain conditions such as lupus have been known to be an issue, simply because lupus can cause rashes on the skin.

It is not advised for Botox® to be injected through the skin that is being affected by some other condition such as a rash, cancer, rosacea, eczema, hives, or psoriasis. The injection can inflame the skin condition, and that reaction can subsequently affect the botulinum toxin.
