Botox
Conveniently located to serve Houston, Bellaire, Baytown, and the Greater Houston area
Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery offers Botox® Cosmetic injections under the direct care of Dr. Mirwat S. Sami, a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained oculofacial plastic surgeon. Patients across Houston, Bellaire, and Baytown choose our practice for treatment plans guided by deep facial-anatomy expertise and conservative, individualized injection technique.
Dr. Sami performs every Botox® treatment herself, drawing on her surgical training in the periorbital and facial muscle systems to plan injections that soften lines while preserving natural movement.
What Is Botox® Cosmetic and How Does It Work?
Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles. By easing muscle activity in treated areas, Botox® helps soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, the lines created by repeated expressions such as frowning, squinting, or raising the brows.
Botox® was first introduced by ophthalmologists in the 1980s for the treatment of certain eye-muscle disorders. Its cosmetic use received FDA approval in 2002 for moderate-to-severe glabellar (frown) lines, and it remains one of the most widely performed non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the United States.
What Areas Can Botox® Treat?
At Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Sami uses Botox® injections to address several common cosmetic and functional concerns. Confirmed treatment areas include:
- Forehead lines: Horizontal creases across the upper forehead.
- Frown lines (glabellar / “11s”): Vertical lines between the brows.
- Crow’s feet: Fine lines that fan out from the corners of the eyes.
- Mouth/lipstick lines: Vertical lines around the mouth.
- Masseter/jaw slimming: For an overly square or strong jawline.
- Underarm hyperhidrosis: Excessive underarm sweating.
- Chronic migraine headaches: As part of medical management.
- Bruxism: For teeth clenching and grinding.
For deeper folds, lost cheek volume, or undereye hollowing, dermal fillers may be a better option. Dr. Sami can review the right approach during your consultation.
Benefits of Botox® Cosmetic for a Smoother, More Youthful Appearance
Botox® remains one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments due to its versatility and predictable, temporary results. Patient-focused benefits may include:
- Softens dynamic wrinkles: Botox® reduces muscle activity behind expression lines, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead creases.
- Supports preventative care: Consistent treatment may help slow the deepening of fine lines into more set creases over time.
- A non-surgical, low-downtime option: No incisions or general anesthesia are required for cosmetic injections.
- Customizable planning: Treatment is tailored to your unique muscle activity, facial structure, and aesthetic goals.
- Subtle, expression-preserving outcomes: Conservative dosing helps maintain natural-looking movement and balance.
- Versatile aesthetic and functional uses: From softening expression lines to easing jaw tension related to bruxism.
Masseter Botox® in Houston for Jaw Slimming and Bruxism Relief
Many patients in Houston seek Botox® specifically for the jaw, either to refine an overly square or wide jawline, or to relieve symptoms of bruxism (chronic teeth clenching and grinding). The masseter is one of the body’s strongest chewing muscles. When it becomes enlarged from genetics, repeated clenching, or grinding, it may contribute to a heavier jaw appearance, jaw fatigue, and related facial discomfort.
Injecting Botox® into the masseter relaxes the muscle over time. Potential benefits may include:
- A softer contour to an overly square jaw.
- Relief from jaw clenching, grinding, and related tension.
- Reduction in associated symptoms such as morning jaw soreness or tension headaches.
Unlike surgical jaw-reduction procedures, Masseter Botox® is non-surgical and does not require extended recovery. To learn more about facial-balance options, see our jawline contouring page.
Are You a Good Candidate for Botox® Cosmetic?
Adults in good general health who want to soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, refine the jawline, or address bruxism may be candidates for Botox®. Realistic expectations and a willingness to maintain results with periodic treatments are important to long-term satisfaction.
Botox® may not be appropriate for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have certain neuromuscular disorders, who are allergic to any component of the product, or who have an active skin infection or rash at the proposed injection site. A consultation with Dr. Sami is the best way to determine candidacy and review any medical conditions or medications that should be considered.
How to Prepare for Your Botox® Appointment
A few simple steps may help support your results and reduce the chance of bruising:
- Limit blood-thinning medications and supplements when possible: Aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo may increase bruising. Do not stop any prescribed medication without your physician’s approval.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment: Alcohol may increase the risk of bruising.
- Hold facial treatments for at least 24 hours: Avoid waxing, exfoliating acids, retinol, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, or laser treatments in the area being injected, or longer if directed by your provider.
- Arrive with clean skin: Come without heavy makeup if possible.
- Share your medical history: Let our team know about medications, allergies, prior cosmetic injectables, and any neuromuscular conditions.
What to Expect During Your Botox® Treatment
A Botox® appointment at Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery is typically a brief, in-office visit. Dr. Sami begins with a focused facial assessment, watching how your muscles move so injection points can be planned with anatomy and balance in mind.
Treatment is delivered through a series of small injections using a fine needle. Most patients tolerate the procedure well, and any discomfort is brief. Based on Dr. Sami’s clinical experience, our practice does not routinely use topical anesthetic creams for Botox®, as we have found they may interfere with the duration and effect of the toxin.
The injection portion of the visit is usually completed within about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated.
What to Expect After Botox® Treatment
Botox® is considered a low-downtime treatment, and most patients return to routine, low-intensity activities right after their appointment. To support a smooth recovery and a balanced result, we typically recommend:
- For the first 24 hours: Avoid strenuous exercise, heat exposure (saunas, hot yoga, hot tubs), and lying flat for the first several hours after treatment.
- For the first 24 hours: Avoid rubbing, massaging, or pressing on the treated areas. Skip facials, microdermabrasion, and similar facial treatments.
- Within 24 to 48 hours: Mild redness, pinpoint bruising, small injection-site bumps, or temporary tenderness may occur and typically resolve on their own.
- After a few days: Follow your provider’s instructions regarding sun exposure, makeup application, and the timing of any other skincare treatments.
Dr. Sami will review your personalized aftercare plan before you leave the office.
When Will I See Results from Botox®?
Many patients begin to notice softening of treated lines within 3 to 5 days after treatment, with full results typically visible around two weeks. Final results typically last 3 to 4 months, although individual results vary based on metabolism, dosing, and the area treated.
Masseter Botox® for jaw slimming or bruxism may take longer to show its full effect and is often maintained on a different schedule than facial-line treatments. Periodic touch-ups help maintain a consistent appearance over time.
How Much Does Botox® Cost in Houston?
The cost of Botox® at our practice depends on the treatment area, the number of units needed to achieve your goals, and your overall plan. On average, the cost of Botox® Cosmetic treatment in Houston ranges from $200 to $700 per session, with personalized pricing reviewed during your consultation.
If you are interested in current Allergan Aesthetics rewards or savings programs, please ask our team about Allē rewards eligibility before your visit. Botox® for cosmetic indications is generally considered elective and is not typically covered by insurance.
