WHAT IS BLEPHAROPLASTY?
Blepharoplasty, also popularly known as “eyelid lift surgery” or an “eye lift,” is one of the most commonly performed ophthalmic plastic surgeries. During this procedure, redundant and saggy eyelid skin and outpouching fat pockets are reduced and repositioned to restore aesthetic balance and improve appearance. Because it can address puffy eyelids, it is also sometimes called “undereye bag surgery.”
Blepharoplasty procedures can be performed in the upper and lower eyelids and can be pursued for both cosmetic and functional improvement.
Although this procedure has been in existence for a long time, it has been tremendously refined and its true potential towards achieving aesthetic harmony is well appreciated and harnessed in today’s enlightened age. That is why it is imperative that you seek an oculoplastic surgeon, trained in all the subtle nuances of this procedure and its countless outcomes, to perform this cosmetic procedure on your eyes to ensure you achieve the best results.
The goal in a cosmetic blepharoplasty is to reveal a more invigorated, youthful and refreshed appearance. Dr. Sami’s vast experience with cosmetic surgery and her attention to details ensures her patients obtain excellent results and outstanding care.
We encourage you to take a few minutes to learn more about these surgeries listed in the Cosmetic Procedures section, including Asian blepharoplasty, also called double eyelid surgery.

Cosmetic blepharoplasty, just like any eyelid procedure, begins with a thorough knowledge of periorbital structures together with a unique and customized approach to each individual patient. Remember, no two eyes are the same, let alone any two faces. In addition, every person has some degree of asymmetry between the two halves of the face.
Dr. Sami carefully customizes her operative plan for each patient, taking into account their unique features such as eyebrow position, facial symmetry, shape of the eye, position of fat pads, skin quality, muscle tone, dry eye problems and position of eyeball in relation to the facial bones. Based on her preoperative assessment and the needs and expectations of each patient, she ensures her surgical plan is carried out with compassionate care to yield fantastic results.
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation in an outpatient setting. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, small incisions are made. For upper blepharoplasty, the incision is made in the natural crease at the top of the lid. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is either made right below the lash line or inside the lid.
Next, excess skin is trimmed away, drooping muscles are tightened, and excess fat is removed and/or repositioned. Finally, the incisions are closed, often using fine dissolvable sutures. The procedure can be performed at the same time as other eyelid or orbital procedures, such as browlift or eyelid malposition correction.
At Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on our compassionate patient care, our sensitivity and understanding of each patient’s needs and expectations and our drive for excellence. Our goal is to help you and your loved ones feel welcome, comfortable and 100% satisfied with your experience.
THE HEALING PROCESS
Once your cosmetic blepharoplasty procedure is complete, you will need to be driven home by a friend or a family member, because you will not be able to drive immediately following surgery.
During the recovery process after upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery, there will be a degree of swelling and bruising in the region. Cold compresses can help with these issues. It will also be important to keep your head elevated.
You will need to take time off from work to heal, and you must avoid physically taxing activities. You will also need to make sure to carefully apply sunscreen to the eyelids before exposing them to sunlight, since they will be particularly vulnerable to sun damage for a time.
HOW MUCH DOES COSMETIC BLEPHAROPLASTY COST?
When deciding on cosmetic blepharoplasty, cost is always a consideration. The price of a cosmetic eyelid surgery procedure depends on several factors, including which eyelids are being addressed, which techniques are being utilized, and how much time is required to perform the procedure.
