Watch the video of our patient, Stacy Senkyrik, being interviewed about her journey of eyelid rejuvenation. Stacey Senkyrik had surgery on her upper and lower eyelids a few months ago to get rid of extra skin in her upper and lower lids as well as under-eye bags. “I was looking at one of my pictures and I was like, ‘I look so pretty except for my eyes.’ They just made me look so much older,” Senkyrik said.

Since she prided herself on looking younger than her age most of her life, Stacy went running to Dr. Mirwat Sami, an oculoplastic surgeon referred to her by her friends. After discussing various options, Senkyrik decided to proceed with surgery and states that she is thrilled with the results from her procedure. “I was trying creams and lotions and all kinds of different stuff but know this was like one of the best things I could have done for my face ever,” she said.

Under-eye bags and dark circles are a common cosmetic concern and, in Houston, this may be a bigger problem than in other places because of allergies and excessive sun exposure. The skin stretching around your eyes from years of allergies can impact you as much as natural aging does. The eye region tends to age the fastest in the face, likely due to the delicate nature of the skin and structures. And eventually everybody loses their youthful bright eyes, but there are ways to improve or banish the bags under them.

As an Oculoplastic Surgeon, an Ophthalmologist specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face and eyes, Dr. Mirwat Sami describes how facial volume loss and loss of skin collagen and elastin can cause aging changes around the eyes. She also states, “As we age, fat and muscle descend which gives people a hollow look”. There are multiple ways to treat this condition, and the choices range from minimally invasive injectable treatments to surgery, depending on the extent of aging changes. Dr. Sami recommends that, at a minimum, people should use a good eye cream to hydrate the skin, protect it from the harsh environment and thus slow down aging process. This is also essential after any cosmetic treatment to continue to nurture the delicate skin of the eye region. She recommends the use of “medical-grade” products as compared to “cosmetic-grade” or over the counter products to ensure that the active ingredients in the products are well regulated and effective.

For lines and wrinkles, Botox injections are a great option and can be used together with skincare as well as surgery. Deeper hollows such as in the tear trough region can give the appearance of dark circles and an aged, tired look. In some cases, this can be corrected with dermal filler injections by adding volume in areas of volume loss or descent. But as far as eliminating the skin that causes under eye bags, creams just won’t cut it. Botox and fillers may help early on, however the gold standard to get results is surgery.

Dr. Mirwat Sami says: “Surgery is always the gold standard in order to remove any extra skin and to reposition the fat. The goal is to reposition some of that fat and deposit it into areas like the tear trough where there’s a hollow.” After the age of 40, we lose about a teaspoon of volume a year in our face meaning that without acting everyone will lose volume which is that youthful look. The restoration of volume is essential in achieving a youthful and refreshed look. Volume restoration is also important to prevent a gaunt or “over-done” look.

With Dr. Sami’s extensive expertise and training in treating medical and cosmetic problems of the face around the eyes, there are several options and treatments available to improve under eye bags, hollows and dark circles.
