May is designated as Skin Cancer Awareness Month, in an effort to raise awareness about skin cancer and promoting sun protection and sun safety all year round.
As an Oculofacial plastic surgeon, Dr. Mirwat Sami is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery including skin cancer reconstruction. Dr. Sami says, “our skin is one of our largest organs and it is always exposed to the sun”. For that matter, we need to be aware of the importance of sun exposure and how it can lead to skin cancer.
Many Hispanics and African Americans believe that they are protected from the sun because of their darker skin tones and increased melanin index and they aren’t taking the necessary steps in order to protect themselves from the UV rays. This misconception is resulting in increasing skin cancer rates among Latinos and African Americans over the past two decades. They are also running the risk of being diagnosed at an advanced stage of skin cancer which is harder to treat due to it spreading to other parts of the body.
Dr. Mirwat Sami emphasizes the importance not only prevention, but also early detection and treatment of eyelid skin cancer as it can cause vision loss and other complex issues.
